The Falkland Islands Government announced that its Executive Council had approved a plan to accelerate housing provision in Stanley, in response to the urgent need to expand the housing stock. The initiative provides for the development of infrastructure for 60 new plots at Murray Heights, intended for modular housing solutions, and the construction of 30 modular units.

The project will be carried out in partnership with Navitas Petroleum Ltd and is expected to deliver 30 houses for the government (FIG) within 12 months. The measure falls under the allocation of up to 10 million pounds for housing announced earlier this year. According to officials, modular construction can put up units roughly twice as fast as traditional building, and Murray Heights was identified as a suitable and efficient site for the expansion.

By prioritizing the Murray Heights development, the Executive Council acknowledged that resources will need to be temporarily diverted from construction work at Sapper Hill, Phase 7. In the short term, this will cause delays of several months, although the overall effect will later allow a greater number of plots at Sapper Hill to be released for private development.

The portfolio holder for Public Infrastructure, Legislative Assembly member Dean Dent, said the Falklands continue to see sustained demand for housing that is straining the government's stock and reinforcing the need for accelerated delivery. “A range of options have been explored to deliver additional accommodation in a cost-effective manner,” he said.

Dent added that the scheme should create opportunities for local contractors, alongside faster delivery and savings from economies of scale and the collaboration with Navitas, which will also build some homes on the development for its own use.

The government has repeatedly identified the housing shortage as one of the territory's main challenges, amid demand for labor across the public and private sectors. Housing investment is among the priorities of the 2026/27 budget, presented to the Legislative Assembly this week, which set aside specific funds to begin addressing the shortfall.

The announcement adds to other recent progress, including the completion of 40 houses at Bennett's Paddock and of Ross Road Phase 11, and complements the Sapper Hill Phase 7 project, which is expected to deliver more than 100 serviced plots.
