    Argentina opens Illex squid season south of parallel 49

    On the basis of the INIDEP resolution, south of parallel 44 is exclusive for vessels that had been operating south of parallel 49 during at least five days from 10 January

    The Argentine government, through the Federal Fisheries Council has officially opened the Illex squid season south of parallel 49. The two main fisheries chambers, CAIPA and CEPA had requested that the season begin 10 January south of parallel 44, but the Council in early December denied the request based on a scientific report from INIDEP, the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development.

    Milei arrives in Rio Gallegos enroute to Antarctica

    Argentine President Javier Milei landed at around 8.30 pm Friday in Río Gallegos to stay the night before flying on to the Marambio Base in Antarctica. Traveling with the head of state were Ministers Diana Mondino (Foreign Affairs), Guillermo Francos (Interior), and Luis Petri (Defense) as well as Presidential Secretary Karina Milei, among other officials making up the entourage of 23.

    The Argentine Navy icebreaker ARA Almirante Irízar stopped in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean this week, en route to this summer's Antarctic campaign, at the site where the doomed submarine ARA San Juan was found off Comodoro Rivadavia in 2018, paying tribute to the crew and demanding justice from the ongoing investigation into the unit's 2017 sinking.

The head of state intends to launch a “pollution control,” according to Casa Rosada sources.

    Uruguayan President and his children land in Antarctica

    Lacalle and his children were expected to stay at the Artigas base for nearly 24 hours

    The Uruguayan Air Force's Lockheed C-130 Hercules FAU 594 carrying President Luis Lacalle Pou and his children landed at the South American country's Artigas Base (BCAA) in Antarctica on Tuesday. “After 30 years, I have returned to Antarctica. The Artigas base houses military and civilians who work side by side,” Lacalle wrote on social networks.

    In a significant step towards supporting marine conservation efforts in the South Atlantic, the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) has announced the successful transition of ownership of Pharos Marine Limited (part of the Falklands based Byron group) to Workboat Services Limited, WBS, ensuring the continued operational presence of the vessel MV Pharos SG in the South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands Maritime Zone.
