  Work to fully reopen Argentina's Petrel Base in Antarctica goes on

  

  Argentine Navy's ARA Puerto Argentino sloop has sucessfully unloaded supplies and machinery this week at the Petrel Base in Antarctica, it was reported. A self-propelled pontoon built entirely at the Tandanor–CINAR shipyard was used for the reconstruction of this base, which is returning to permanent service after nearly 50 years.

  BAS joins project to overcome shortage of berths for scientific researchers in polar regions

  

  British Antarctic Survey has teamed up with the National Oceanography Centre and the University of Glasgow to champion the FindAScienceBerth project, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council. The project will open up more opportunities for early career researchers and technicians, particularly from traditionally excluded groups, to join science research cruises, breaking down barriers for conducting fieldwork in marine science.

  Acoustic survey finds twilight zone in Southern ocean an emporium of fish, BAS report

  

  A new study highlights there could be up to four times more fish in the mesopelagic, or ‘twilight’, zone of the Southern Ocean than previously thought. Scientists at British Antarctic Survey and Bristol University discovered that by accounting for different acoustic properties of fish, the biomass, or total weight, of mesopelagic fish is likely to be 1.8 – 3.6 times higher than they previously calculated.

  By American Geophysical Union – Scientists have uncovered the source of a mysterious 2021 tsunami that sent waves around the globe. In August 2021, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit near the South Sandwich Islands, creating a tsunami that rippled around the globe. The epicenter was 47 kilometers below the Earth's surface—too deep to initiate a tsunami—and the rupture was nearly 400 kilometers long, which should have generated a much larger earthquake.

  Punta Arenas cruise season: 27 vessels on tours of Antarctica

  

  The Punta Arenas port management company, in the extreme south of Chile, has offered a timetable of cruise vessel activities during the first two weeks of February. According to the program, eleven calls are scheduled in the two weeks to 15 February. Until Sunday 6 February six cruise vessels were effectively called.
