  Chile planning an optical fiber cable from Puerto Williams to Antarctica

  

  The regional government of Magallanes extreme south of Chile signed an agreement with the Telecommunications ministry and Country Development Secretariat to study the feasibility of an optical fiber from the region to the Antarctic peninsula.

  Departure of Antarctic cruise from Ushuaia delayed because of Covid 19 among the crew

  

  Covid 19 emergency in Ushuaia delays the departure of Quark Expeditions state of the art cruise vessel Ultramarine to Antarctica. According to reports from the capital of Tierra del Fuego, abiding by sanitary protocols, the 173 crew members of the vessel were on board PCR tested, with four of them turning out positive.

  Research done in Falklands shows albatrosses are “divorcing” because of climate change

  

  A recent Royal Society study shows climate change and rising oceans are pushing black-browed albatross breakup rates higher. Among the world's most devoted monogamous species, they are “divorcing” more frequently. For 15 years, researchers studied a wild population of 15,500 breeding couples in the Falkland Islands, and in effect, only 1 to 3% of couples would separate after picking a partner to pursue more romantic pastures.

  British Army Captain Harpreet Chandi, has begun her attempt to become the first woman of colour to cross the Antarctic unsupported. She is on her way to Union Glacier (to the ALE base) where her start point is a 30min flight away, Hercules Inlet.

  Polar class vessel Crystal Endeavor departed from Ushuaia, the southernmost tip of Argentina on her first-ever expedition voyage to Antarctica, after receiving the epidemiological clearance from local sanitary authorities on Wednesday.

  Ponant cruises operating Antarctic expeditions from Ushuaia

  

  French cruise company Ponant, specializing in Antarctic expeditions has two of its vessels in the port of Ushuaia, extreme south of Argentina. L'Austral and Le Boreal twin vessels are 142 meters long with a capacity of 246 passengers and 140 crew.
