    Brazilian authorities Monday decreed a “state of water shortage” in the basins of five major rivers nationwide. The critical situation affects some 2,264 million km², it was explained. It was the first time in over 100 gauging these water levels that such an extreme measure has been adopted.

    FTA to represent 5.1% increase in Brazil's commerce with EU

    A Brazilian expert foresees that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) and the European Union (EU) will represent a 5.1% increase in commerce with the bloc that is already South America's largest country's second-largest partner, behind China, Agencia Brasil reported. These projections would mean a 0.34% rise in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the sum of goods and services produced in the country.

    Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Thursday decorated former Uruguayan President José Pepe Mujica (2010-2015) with the National Order of the Southern Cross on the sidelines of the two-day Mercosur Summit in Montevideo, Agencia Brasil reported. Mujica, 89, had been granted a similar accolade earlier Thursday by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

    Rio de Janeiro up for busy cruise ship activity this month

    Rio de Janeiro authorities confirmed that the cruise ship industry is expected to bring some 74,000 tourists this month, Agencia Brasil reported Monday after the season kicked off Sunday with the arrival of the first five of nine vessels.
