    After more than five hours of conversations, diplomatic delegations from Venezuela and Guyana agreed on Thursday in Brasilia to discuss the dispute over the oil-rich Essequibo territory peacefully. The gathering at the Itamaraty Palace resulted from talks between Presidents Nicolás Maduro and Irfaan Ali on December 14 in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

    Increase in air travel reported in Brazil

    Domestic flight passengers increased from 82.2 million in 2022 to 91.4 million last year, Costa Filho explained

    South America's largest country is achieving record figures in its travel industry, Agencia Brasil reported. In 2023, Brazil saw 112.6 million passengers on domestic and international flights, marking a 15.3% increase from 2022's 97.6 million. “In the next three years, we aim to reach 140 million passengers,” Ports and Airports Minister Silvio Costa Filho said.

    Toyota's first plant in Brazil shut down

    Japanese giant carmakers Toyota this week closed its São Bernardo plant, the company's oldest factory in Brazil which had been established in 1962. It was there that the Land Cruiser “Bandeirante” and the Corolla models were built in South America. Toyota's administrative headquarters for Brazil and South America also operated there for decades. It was said to be the company's first production facility outside Japan.

    New strain of Covid-19 detected in Brazil

    Brazilian authorities Monday confirmed the detection of four cases of the JN 2.5 subvariant of the SARS-Cov-2 virus in the state of Mato Grosso. The patients were reported to be all female and hospitalized in a serious condition. One of them even died. However, the Mato Grosso State Health Department said there was no reason to panic because at this point “it is not possible to say that the cause of death was COVID-19” since ”the patient already had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).”
