US President Donald Trump said he accepts the results of the midterm elections, in which Democrats regained control of both chambers of Congress, and signalled willingness to negotiate with the opposition, but blamed the Republican defeat on his absence from the ballot and threatened to veto the new Congress’s legislation.

Markets react to the US midterms: the dollar falls and gold rises

The US dollar weakened against major currencies on Wednesday morning and gold rose more than 2% to above US$4,000 an ounce as markets assessed the Democratic victory in the midterm elections, which will give the opposition control of both chambers of Congress for the final two years of Donald Trump’s presidency.

Spain’s transport minister resigns after the train crash that killed at least 69 people

Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente resigned on Tuesday, six days after a collision between two high-speed trains near the town of Urda, in Toledo province, that killed at least 69 people. Puente also said he was withdrawing his name from the Socialist Party’s lists for the snap general election on November 29.

An Oxford professor to sit as the UK's chosen judge in the Falklands dispute in Hamburg

British jurist Vaughan Lowe, emeritus professor of public international law at the University of Oxford, will be the judge ad hoc chosen by the United Kingdom in the case between Argentina and London before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea over hydrocarbon exploitation north of the Falklands. Lowe will make his solemn declaration on Monday, November 9, the day before the hearing.
