  Brazil imports record volumes of fertilizers, despite escalating prices

  

  Brazil has imported record volumes of fertilizers during the first half of the year, some 14,1 million tons, an increase of 14% over the same period last year. The data was released by GlobalFert a specialized portal and points out June as the month with the highest volume.

  Magallanes with first elected governor wants to freeze or relocate concessions for news salmon farms

  

  Next Thursday Magallanes Region will be living a historic event, for the first time an elected governor will be taking office in Punta Arenas. Until now it was the central government, Santiago that appointed the official, but since the political and social reforms that emerged from the 2019/20 upheavals including the current assembly to draft a new constitution, things have changed in Chile particularly exposing the fragility of the so-called “Chilean model”. And in Magallanes, an issue outstands, salmon farming in maritime spaces.

  China launches three month squid fishing moratorium in South West Atlantic, official release

  

  China officially launches its voluntary fishing moratorium on the high seas from July this year to preserve squid resources in open waters, according to a resolution from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on June 28 and reported by the Xinhua news agency.

  Tierra del Fuego approves bill banning salmon farming in its waters; Chilean environmentalist groups cheer the decision

  

  Tierra del Fuego lawmakers on Wednesday approved, unanimously the bill which bans salmon farming in the waters of the province. Sponsored by Pablo Villegas from the provincial party, Movimiento Popular Fueguino, the bill privileges the environment over such an industry, and according to its promoters places Argentina at the head of the green economy.

  Melt lakes: Scientists detect sudden large Antarctic water mass drains empty

  

  Scientists in Australia and the United States are reporting the sudden loss of a large ice-covered Antarctic lake covering an area of eleven square kilometres. The rare event occurred during the winter of 2019 on Amery Ice Shelf in East Antarctica and was noticed in satellite images the following summer by Dr Roland Warner from the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership at the University of Tasmania.
