  Peru to allocate green debt swap to tropical forest protection in Amazon

  

  The Peruvian administration of President Dina Boluarte pledged to use the proceeds from a US$ 20 million debt swap with the United States for climate action in the Amazon to finance a tropical forest protection fund over the next 13 years, it was reported Wednesday in Lima. It is the third debt-for-nature swap between the two governments.

  Libyan storm: Death toll reaches 5,300 and 10,000 people are missing

  

  The latest reports from civil war-torn Libya speak of more than 5,300 casualties left by Storm Daniel, in addition to more than 7,000 people treated for injuries and around 10,000 still missing. It is the worst natural disaster to hit this part of the country since the 1963 earthquake in the city of Al Marj.

  Over 2,000 people feared dead as Storm Daniel hits war-torn Libya

  

  According to the latest reports from Libya, over 2,000 people are feared dead at dawn Tuesday after Storm Daniel unleashed torrential rain and extreme flooding across the north-eastern part of the country, while in the city of Derna, between 5,000 and 6,000 people are missing, including seven servicemen, Eastern Libyan Army Spokesperson Ahmed al-Mosmari said.

  At least 46 people still missing in post-cyclone southeastern Brazil

  

  Brazilian authorities said Friday that at least 46 people were missing after a devastating cyclone hit the southeastern State of Rio Grande do Sul since early Monday, where already 41 casualties have been reported. The federal government also pledged R$ 800 (US$167) for each of the over 3,000 people who have lost their homes to the storm.

  More rain forecast in southeastern Brazil as cyclone death toll rises

  

  Brazil's National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) said on Wednesday that more rain was to be expected in parts of the State of Rio Grande do Sul throughout the September 7 holiday as the death toll from the recent extratropical cyclone rose to 37 (including one victim in the neighboring State of Santa Catarina), Agência Brasil reported. Rio Grande do Sul's government was to declare a state of public calamity.

  Cyclone in southern Brazil causes death, floods and destruction

  

  Some twenty-one people have been killed as a consequence of the torrential rain and winds caused by a cyclone in southern Brazil, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul neighboring Uruguay and Argentina. Local authorities said it was the state's worst-ever weather disaster given the number of deaths so far and the thousands left homeless.
