    Falklands Environment Strategy: First Progress Report available online

    Projects have expanded, the Falkland Islands Community School projects on earwig control and 3D printing of recycled plastic

    Following the adoption of the Falkland Islands Environment Strategy 2021 – 2040 by the Executive Council in late 2021, there has been much work across government towards achieving the Vision of the Strategy. The first progress report for 2022 has been released and is available on the FIG Environment Department website.

    The latest reports from Türkiye and Syria two days after the series of earthquakes and aftershocks that hit the region mention at least 8,100 people confirmed dead as hopes of finding any new survivors under the rubble of collapsed buildings are turning slimmer by the minute.

    Earthquake death toll reaches 4,300, more victims feared under the rubble

    There have been 183 aftershocks since the original earthquakes including one of 7.6 magnitude at 7.24 am local time

    The number of casualties from the series of earthquakes hitting Türkiye and Syria early Monday has been updated to 4,300, it was reported. Due to the time the quake occurred (4.17 local time), most people were sleeping in their homes and many were unable to escape. Rescuers are searching for survivors in the rubble.

    Earthquake rocks Türkiye and Syria killing around 1,200 people

    Over 1,200 people died in Türkiye and Syria as hundreds of buildings collapsed in the areas hit by an earthquake of 7.8-degree magnitude with its epicenter in the border city of Gaziantep. Rescue teams were searching for people trapped under the rubble. Humanitarian aid was reported on its way from various parts of the world. There were a total of 22 aftershocks, some of them strong.

    Chilean authorities Friday reported at least 13 people lost their lives amid the raging wildfire that is hitting several parts of the South American country. Two people died when a firefighting helicopter crashed during a mission and 11 others in Santa Juana.

    The Government of Chile has declared a “red alert” in the central part of the country due to the heat wave stemming from 39 major forest fires as the wave keeps spreading throughout the country, most of them in Araucania (17) but also in Bío Bío (7), Ñuble (7), Maule (4), Los Lagos (3), and one in the Santiago Metropolitan Region.
