On December 19th 2025, the Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC) published its 2025 Business Climate Survey with the statement:

In its annual routine statement, the Argentine Foreign ministry has recalled the 193rd anniversary of 3 January 1833, when ‘the illegitimate occupation of the Malvinas Islands’ and ‘has reaffirmed its legitimate and imprescriptible sovereignty rights over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and their surrounding maritime spaces’.

As agreed in the Budget for 2025/26, the rate of embarkation tax payable by passengers departing the Falkland Islands by air, in accordance with the Embarkation Tax Regulations Ordinance 1999, will increase from £32 to £40 per passenger, with effect from Thursday 1 January 2026.

Argentine President Javier Milei sparked a fresh diplomatic controversy this week after telling London's The Telegraph that his country's sovereignty claim over the Falkland/Malvinas Islands was non-negotiable.
