  Iceland and Norway exporting tons of whale meat to Japan

  

  Companies from Iceland and Norway have begun exporting whale-meat to Japan. About 60 tons of meat from fin whales caught in the 2006 Icelandic hunt was reportedly sent with a much smaller amount of minke meat from Norway according to a report from BBC.

  European fishermen up in arms over fuel prices

  Thousands of fishermen in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Belgium are on strike protesting rising fuel prices. Union leaders said on Thursday Portugal's entire coastal fleet stayed in port on Friday, while in Spain, 7,000 fishermen held protests at the agriculture ministry.

  Argentine law targets Falklands' licensed fishing operations

  Fish price in UK forecasted to increase 23% next 18 months

  The price of fish landed in the United Kingdom could rise by an average of 23% in the next 12 to 18 months because of rising fuel prices, a government agency warns. Seafish says the cost of some types of fish could go up by as much as 50%.

  Argentina: Fish exports continue to notably decline

  

  Argetnine exported 132.847 tons of fish and shellfish worth 261 million US dollars during the first four months of the year, according to statistics released by the National Food Safety and Quality Service (SENASA). These figures represent a 19.7%drop in volume and a 15.6% drop in value compared to the same four-month period in 2007, when 165.441 tons, worth 309 million US dollars were exported.

  Giant 500 pounds squid netted off Australia

  A giant 500 pound squid was hauled off the coast of Victoria (Australia) yesterday. Fishing trawler skipper Mr Rang Pene winched up his catch from the ocean floor to find a large mass halfway down the net.

  Extinction threat for 21 shark and 11 ray species

  The first study to determine the global status of 21 species of oceanic pelagic sharks and rays reveals that 11 of them are threatened with extinction, says IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) on International Biodiversity Day.
