    South Georgia: Yacht Charter to support wandering albatross surveys

    19th June was albatross day, when the beautiful marine bird is celebrated

    In 2024, the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) will be undertaking a census of wandering albatross on South Georgia alongside various complementary terrestrial monitoring activities. To support this, GSGSSI requires to charter a yacht. We invite operators to tender for the provision of this service.

    Antarctic Treaty members agree to protect Shackleton's Endurance wreck 3.000 meters deep in the Weddell Sea

    Member states of the Antarctic Treaty have already declared the wreck, which lies in 3,000m of water, a Historic Site and Monument (HSM).

    A 500m perimeter is being implemented to aid the protection of Endurance, the ship famously lost in the Antarctic by explorer Ernest Shackleton. The vessel's position on the Weddell Sea floor was finally identified in March, 107 years after its sinking.

    WHO admits that antibiotic resistance is winning the innovation battle

    According to WHO, in 2021 there were only 27 new antibiotics in clinical development against priority pathogens, down from 31 products in 2017

    Development of new antibacterial treatments is inadequate to address the mounting threat of antibiotic resistance, according to the annual pipeline report by the World Health Organization. The 2021 report describes the antibacterial clinical and preclinical pipeline as stagnant and far from meeting global needs. Since 2017 only 12 antibiotics have been approved, 10 of which belong to existing classes with established mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
