    FAO, OIE, and WHO launch One Health approach guide to addressing zoonotic diseases


    Zoonotic diseases – those diseases that can spread between animals and people – continue to have major impacts on human health.

    Zoonotic diseases continue to be a threat to global health, causing millions of deaths and economic losses every year. To support countries to control these diseases, the Tripartite organizations (FAO, OIE and WHO) launched a guide entitled ‘Taking a Multisectoral, One Health Approach: A Tripartite Guide to Addressing Zoonotic Diseases in Countries’.

    South African diver experiences “a whale of a time” but survives

    “It got dark and I felt some pressure on my hip,” Schimpf explained. “Once I felt the pressure I instantly knew a whale had gripped me.” 

     A diver who ended up trapped in the mouth of a massive whale joked that he didn't have “a whale of a time” but called the unique encounter “a very special event.” 

Rainer Schimpf, 51, was diving off the coast of South Africa with a documentary crew in February when the breaching whale reached the surface, its mouth wide open.

Millions of people are “drawn together” because of the collective values shared by the institution, the Queen says in her address to the 53 countries of the Commonwealth.

    World youth from 80 countries plan to strike on Friday calling on countries to address climate change

    The global youth movement was kick-started last year by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg

    The young people of the world have a message for adults, and this Friday (March 15) they will go on strike to make sure their views on climate change are heard. Tens of thousands of students from more than 80 countries and territories - including the United States, Malaysia and Hong Kong - plan to skip school that day to urge adults to treat climate change as a crisis, and for governments to take action now.

    Thousands of people in Russia have protested against plans to introduce tighter restrictions on the internet. A mass rally in Moscow and similar demonstrations in two other cities were called after parliament backed the controversial bill last month.

    US plane maker Boeing faces questions after an Ethiopian Airlines 737 crash on Sunday killed all 157 people on board. It was the second crash in five months involving a 737 Max 8, the newest version of the plane. Comparisons are being drawn with a Lion Air accident last October where the plane lost altitude soon after takeoff.

    Ex US intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning jailed for refusing to testify on Wikeleaks

    Manning, 31, told US District Judge Claude Hilton that she would “accept whatever you bring upon me”, but would not testify, the Associated Press reported.

    Former US intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning has been jailed for refusing to testify before an investigation into Wikileaks. A Virginia judge ordered her taken into custody until the grand jury's work is finished or she decides to testify. Manning said she shared everything she knows during her court-martial.
