
Brazil’s conservative government will extend the military’s deployment to fight the destruction of the Amazon rainforest by five months through April 2021 from its previous November end date, Vice President Hamilton Mourao said on Monday.

After more than six years in confinement, Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López is a free man and has been reunited with his family in Madrid. Spain has declared a national state of emergency and imposed a night-time curfew in an effort to help control a new spike in Covid-19 infections. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the curfew, between the hours of 23:00 and 06:00, would come into force on Sunday.

The decomposed remains of seven people, believed to be undocumented migrants, have been discovered in a fertilizer container in Paraguay, officials said. It set off from Serbia on 21 July.
