    UK sends HMS Trent in support of Guyana

    HMS Trent, similar River class as HMS Forth, Falklands patrol vessel, is scheduled to take part in joint exercises with Guyana after Christmas.

    The Royal Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel HMS Trent has been dispatched to Guyana in a show of British support for the Commonwealth nation. Guyana is suffering threats of invasion and land grabbing by neighboring Venezuela which claims some two-thirds of the former British colony's territory.

    Chilean navy adds submarine to keep track of foreign fishing fleets

    The Chilean Navy has bolstered patrol operations against illegal fishing in the South Pacific region and keeping track of fishing vessels crossing into the South Atlantic. Normally operations are the task of naval surface vessels and air surveillance, but last week it took the unusual step of deploying a Scorpene-class attack submarine on a fisheries-enforcement patrol in the Juan Fernandez Archipelago and further south.

    A court in the Salvadoran city of San Francisco Gotera has issued a warrant for the arrest of former president Alfredo Cristiani (1989-1994) and some former lawmakers for their alleged involvement in the 1981 El Mozote massacre in which around 1,000 peasants were killed during the civil war (1980-1992).

    Argentine President Javier Milei issued a decree on Friday calling for extraordinary sessions of Congress between Dec. 26, 2023, and Jan. 31, 2024, to deal with urgent matters. The head of state said earlier this week that “the crisis requires immediate action.” According to the Constitution, during the legislative recess (from Dec. 1 to the last day of February), Congress can only deal with issues specified in the presidential decree calling for extraordinary sessions.
