President of Plaza de Mayo Grandmothers, Mercosur ‘illustrious citizen’

The president of Argentina’s Plaza de Mayo Grandmothers Estela de Carlotto will be honoured as “illustrious citizen” of Mercosur during the group’s coming summit to be celebrated in Asuncion, Paraguay at the end of June, reported the Argentine Foreign Affairs ministry.

Philip Morris takes Uruguay to international court because of tobacco-ban policy

One of the world’s biggest tobacco companies is launching a claim against Uruguay for considering the country’s legislation commercially damaging to the company. Philip Morris corporation has filed a claim at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), a World Bank branch.

Exhibits commemorate Chile’s immigrants from eight communities

Chileans of German, British, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, French, Arab and Israeli descent sacrificed part of their heritage in the late 19th and early 20th centuries upon immigrating to Chile. Though their history is oft-forgotten in modern-day Chile, new exhibitions on display in Santiago and Valparaíso this month will show more than 70 photographs and 50 personal items representing the immigrant experience.
