    Former Paraguayan presidential candidate granted house arrest

    Cubas will be staying at an Asunción hotel and not at his Ciudad del Este house

    Former Senator Paraguayo “Payo” Cubas, the National Crusade Party's (PCN) presidential candidate, who finished third in April's elections with nearly 23% of the votes, was granted house arrest Friday by Judge Raúl Florentín, it was reported. Cubas will serve his house arrest at the Armele Hotel in Asunción after posting bail. He is also forbidden to leave the country without the Court's authorization.

    Argentina offers to help Uruguay through the water crisis

    Argentine President Alberto Fernández offered his Uruguayan colleague Luis Lacalle Pou a mobile water treatment plant, supplies, and personnel to assist in the drinking water crisis affecting Montevideo and the Metropolitan area.

    State of exception extended in Honduras

    Security Secretary Gustavo Sánchez announced the extension of the measure for 45 more days

    Honduras' Council of Ministers has extended the “partial state of exception” in force from Dec. 6 until next Aug. 19, it was reported in Tegucigalpa. The measure seeks to curb violence in at least 175 of the country's 298 municipalities. However, in the municipalities of Choloma and San Pedro Sula a “special curfew” is in force from 11 pm to 4 am due to the seriousness of the crisis there.

    Chile toughens migration controls

    According to statistics provided by the National Statistics Institute (INE) in April of this year, there are 1,482,390 foreigners living in Chile, of which 476,451 are Venezuelans.

    The Chilean government of President Gabriel Boric Font Thursday announced the creation of a committee to handle the expulsion of irregular migrants and develop a biometric registry of foreigners, it was reported in Santiago. The measure seeks to control irregular entries, such as those occurring at the northern border with Peru, of mostly Venezuelan people.

    Argentina's Economy Minister Sergio Massa held a working online meeting Thursday with his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Maait to coordinate policies in multilateral spaces aimed at promoting the inclusive development of middle-income countries, taking into account the challenges posed by the new global financial architecture, it was reported in Buenos Aires. The two countries' relationship with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was also discussed.

    Italian President arrives in Paraguay

    Abdo and Mattarella are to have lunch Friday and Saturday

    Italian President Sergio Mattarella arrived Thursday in Paraguay on a state visit, it was reported in Asunción. It is the first official visit of a President of the Italian Republic to Paraguay. Earlier in his South American tour, the European leader had been touring Chilean Patagonia.

    Uruguay taking action to face water crisis: drinking water reserve is empty for Montevideo

    Despite recent rains throughout the country, the water reserves of Paso Severino, the crucial reservoir that supplies drinking water to the entire metropolitan area, are below 5%.

    Uruguay's Congress Wednesday unanimously approved the Water Emergency Fund to finance access to bottled water among other measures amid an unprecedented shortage of drinking water due to the drought the country is going through.

    Buenos Aires City Police to start using stun guns

    Buenos Aires City authorities Wednesday announced the metropolitan police will start using non-lethal stun guns as of July 17, it was reported from the Argentine capital. City Security Minister Eugenio Burzaco confirmed some 250 officers will be on the streets carrying these weapons.
