    Wildfires in the Amazon rainforest in northern Brazil have ignited a firestorm on social media, with President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday suggesting green groups started the blazes. Images of fires purportedly devouring sections of the world's largest rainforest have gone viral on Twitter.

    Brazil withdraws from hosting a Latin America climate conference next August

    “We do not accept hosting the event because it is an action in the run-up to Cop25,”  Brazil’s environment minister Ricardo Salles told daily O'Globo

    Brazil has withdrawn its offer to host Latin America and Caribbean climate week, a key milestone leading up to the annual UN negotiations. Initially set to take place from 19 to 23 August in Salvador, the event is part of a series of regional summits to encourage dialogue between governments and civil society, in support of national climate pledges.

    Bolsonaro: Brazil owes nothing to the world regarding the environment

    Bolsonaro thanked Sebastian Piñera for agreeing to host in December 2019 the 25th U.N. Conference on Climate Change (COP25), originally planned in Brazil.

    Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said his country “does not owe the world anything” when it comes to the environment. The far-right leader, who is critical of the Paris climate change accord, was speaking in Chile following Friday’s launch of the Forum for the Progress of South America (PROSUR), a conservative-minded group of South American leaders.
