    Methane gas explosion in a Texas dairy farm kills 18,000 cows

    “There's some that survived,” Sheriff Sal Rivera was quoted as saying. “There's some that are probably injured to the point where they'll have to be destroyed.”

    Some 18,000 cows were killed in a blast at a Texas dairy farm earlier this week, possibly by ignited methane gas, according to local authorities. The explosion, at South Fork Dairy near the town of Dimmitt, also left one person in critical condition.

    New Zealand' dairy industry struggling with an outbreak of Mycoplasma bovis

    While experts struggle to pinpoint the original source of the Mycoplasma bovis outbreak, New Zealand Agriculture Minister Damien O'Connor says resources may be better spent on bio security systems that prevent similar outbreaks. Last May the New Zeland government announced it would try to eradicate the disease, which can cause mastitis and abortions in cows, ordering a phased culling program that's expected to cost close to US$ 700 million.

    New Zealand to cull 150.000 cows to eradicate outbreak of Mycoplasma bovis

    New Zealand, which produces three percent of the world’s milk, announced this week its plan to cull about 150,000 cows to eradicate the disease Mycoplasma bovis. The largest mass animal slaughter in the country’s history will cost some US$ 612 million. If successful, it would be the first time an infected country has eliminated the disease-causing bacteria.

    Meat from the offspring of a cloned cow was eaten in the UK last year, the Food Standards Agency has said. Two bulls from the embryos of a cow cloned in the US were bought by a farm near Nairn in the Highlands, and meat from one was sold to consumers.
