Residents of the Falkland Islands annually mark one of the early major naval battles of the First World War, which took place off the coast of the Islands. This year the event was commemorated with a traditional parade, made up of Members of the Falkland Islands Defence Force.
Commemorative events to mark the centenary of the Battles of Coronel and the Falklands were brought to the table by the Falkland Islands 1914 committee. Chair of the committee MLA Phyl Rendell said the committee split into two working groups last year to organize the schedule of events and to progress the memorial wall plans.
Falkland Islanders have been praised for their international campaign of diplomacy explaining their democratic credentials to the world and proclaiming their overwhelming referendum vote for self-determination and retaining their links with the United Kingdom.
