    Argentina's Foreign Ministry sent a note to its Brazilian counterpart explaining the situation of 83 asylum seekers from that country who had fled to avoid jail following their alleged involvement in the Jan 8., 2022, riots in Brasilia, it was reported Thursday in Buenos Aires after some government officials denied these refuge requests existed. Buenos Aires' note was in response to a requirement from the Supreme Federal Court (STF).

    Brazilian authorities have requested Argentina's help to arrest around 143 fugitives who have been tried and convicted for their involvement in the Jan. 8, 2023, riots in Brasilia. The escapees are believed to be supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro who fled to Argentina in the hope of being granted political asylum given President Javier Milei's affinity with the conservative retired Army captain.

    Holders of US, Australian, and Canadian passports will be required a tourist visa to enter Brazil by air, land, or sea, effective next Wednesday (April 10), Agencia Brasil reported.     A court in Brasilia on Tuesday rejected a lawsuit filed by former President Jair Bolsonaro and his wife Michelle, demanding that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva retract his statements that furniture was missing from the Alvorada Palace when he returned there last January. The Bolsonaros had also requested R$20,000 (US$3,953) in damages.

    According to a Datafolha survey released Friday by Folha de S.Paulo, 55% of Brazilians believe former President Jair Bolsonaro wanted to stage a coup d'état whereas 39% of those interviewed thought the retired Army captain never had such intentions. In addition, 7% of respondents were unable to answer that question.
