    Germany mourns one of the architects of modern, unified Europe, Helmut Schmidt

    Mr. Schmidt died on Tuesday afternoon in his home city of Hamburg, his doctor Heiner Greten was quoted as saying by German media.

    Helmut Schmidt, who served as West German Chancellor from 1974 to 1982, has died aged 96, his office says. Mr. Schmidt, who was a Social Democrat, was an architect of the European Monetary System, which linked EU currencies and helped pave the way to the euro. He also helped to consolidate Germany's post-war economic boom.

    PM Cameron and EC Juncker begin talks to renegotiate UK EU membership

    Talks between Cameron and Juncker on Monday had focused on “reforming the EU and renegotiating the UK's relationship with it”, the No 10 spokesman said.

    David Cameron has told European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that “British people are not happy with the status quo” in Europe. The prime minister hosted Mr. Juncker at Chequers at the start of a week of efforts to renegotiate Britain's EU membership.

    Gibraltarians will be able to vote in UK's referendum on ties with European Union

    Legislation for the referendum will be introduced to the UK Parliament on Thursday, the day after the Queen's Speech.

    Gibraltarians will be able to vote in Britain’s referendum on whether to sever ties with the European Union. The franchise for referendum, promised by Prime Minister David Cameron by the end of 2017, will be based on that for a UK general election - meaning Irish, Maltese and Cypriots resident in the UK will get a vote, but other EU citizens will not.
