Canada openly supported Falkland Islands' people right to self determination, backed Canadian companies working in the Islands and confirmed ongoing political and trade assurances. The message was clearly conveyed to a high level Falklands' government and private sector during their recent visit to Canadian capital Ottawa and tour of several provinces.
The Canadian government said on Wednesday that the results of the Falkland Islands referendum are “very clear” and “only” the people of the Islands are entitled to decide on their future. However the European Commission refused to get involved in the discussion arguing it is an “internal affair” of an EU member.
The Canadian government reaffirmed its support of the Falkland Islands and their right to self determination, according to a report from the Canadian edition of The Wall Street Journal.
Canada will not contribute more to UNESCO to make up for a shortfall after the US cut its funding over the Palestinians joining the UN cultural body, Foreign Minister John Baird said Tuesday.
