    Consumers want seafood traceability, according to survey commissioned by MSC

    In 21 countries 65% of consumers said they would like to know that their fish can be followed along the supply chain to a sustainable source.

    The results of the latest market study commissioned by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) reveal an interest among consumers in seafood traceability. Surveys conducted among more than 16,000 seafood consumers globally indicate that over 55% do not trust the labeling of the seafood they consume. In Spain, this value is even higher: 61% of Spanish seafood consumers doubt whether the products they consume are what their packaging reads.

    The Obama administration announced on Tuesday an initiative to track every fish sold in the United States, a move designed to crack down on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, mislabeling of seafood and related problems.

    Conservationists claim seafood labelling ‘fails’ to support sustainable fishing

    The traditional choices of tuna, cod, salmon, prawns and haddock account for 90% of fish sales

    The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has accused UK supermarkets of failing to label seafood in a way that makes it easy for consumers to select sustainable sourced fish. The allegation came as the MCS published the Good Fish guide, which is being hailed as the most comprehensive sustainable seafood advice released to date.
