Dominican Republic authorities closed all land, air, and sea borders with Haiti over a dispute stemming from the construction of a canal in Haitian territory that affects the flow of water from a river shared by both countries.
The Dominican Republic has suspended issuing visas to Haitian nationals and might fully close all borders between the two countries after a recent excavation of a canal in the Massacre River on the Haitian side resulted in water being diverted with ensuing damages to farmers and the environment, President Luis Abinader explained.
Current Presidents Sebastián Piñera of Chile, Guillermo Lasso of Ecuador and Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic were listed on the so-called “Pandora Papers” among the world leaders and celebrities who have money saved in tax havens, according to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
