    Mapuches strike again in southern Chile

    Mapuche groups seek the installation of a sovereign state comprising Chile's southern center of Chile and parts of Argentina

    With just about two weeks to go before the highly-polarized presidential elections between radical candidates from the left and the right, a group claiming to be fighting for the rights of the Mapuche indigenous peoples Friday committed yet another arson attack in the Biobio region in southern Chile. The fire affected a house and two sheds, it was reported.

    Chile's Thursday demonstrations recalled the anniversary of the death of a Mapuche leader by police

    Ana Piquer, the executive director of Amnesty International Chile, said Piñera should respond to the many complaints of police excesses.

    Demonstrators gathered in Chile's public squares on Thursday for another round of protests, which have paralysed daily life for almost a month. This time protests were pegged to the anniversary of a young indigenous man Mapuche, who was shot dead by police in circumstances that are still under investigation. At least 24 people have died and thousands injured in clashes between protesters and police.

    Mapuches and other indigenous groups fight police on Columbus Day

    Chilean police fired tear gas and water cannon on Sunday to break up thousands of indigenous protesters demanding land rights and condemning Columbus Day, after masked demonstrators began throwing stones.
