  Referendum regarding social security to go ahead in Uruguay

  

  Uruguay's labor union Pit-Cnt has garnered the number of signatures required by law; therefore, the social security reform will be subject to a referendum on Oct. 27, simultaneously with the election of a new president. The grouping appeared before Parliament on Saturday with 430,023 signatures to support its request.

  Uruguay's trade union central, the PIT-CNT, carried out this Tuesday a partial four-hour strike with a mobilization, in which it again called for a law to reduce the working day from 48 to 40 hours a week.

  Pacific Alliance members invite Uruguay to sign free trade agreements

  

  Uruguay, a founding member of Mercosur has been invited by Pacific Alliance members Colombia and Peru to update and expand commercial agreements with the two countries and turn them into a free trade treaty, foreign minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa revealed during a hearing in Congress to analyze the current situation in Mercosur.

  Mujica and Cristina Fernandez seal peace at a de-sulphuring plant inauguration

  

  Uruguay and Argentina presidents Jose Mujica and Cristina Fernandez seem to have ironed out differences, at least in public and in the pictures, during the inauguration of a gasoline and diesel de-sulphuring plant in Montevideo, which was financed with Venezuelan funds and Argentine technology.
