    Mexico's 69-year-old President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) Sunday announced he had tested positive for Covid-19 for the third time in his life and was therefore returning to the Federal District (DF) to remain in isolation. All his engagements have been canceled until further notice.

    Fire at migrant detention center in Mexico leaves 38 dead and 28 injured

    The INM confirmed the deaths of 38 people from six different nationalities (one from Colombia, one from Ecuador, 12 from El Salvador, 28 from Guatemala, 13 from Honduras, and 13 from Venezuela)

    At least 38 people were killed and 28 injured in a fire at a migrant detention center in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, on the border with the United States, according to the Mexican government. The fire broke out on Monday night in the facilities of the National Migration Institute (INM) in the state of Chihuahua.

    First shipment of Argentine beef to Mexico takes off

    The first shipment of Argentine beef took off from Ezeiza Airport Tuesday on an AeroMexico flight after more than 10 years of negotiations, the South American country's National Service for Agrifood Health and Quality (Senasa) reported. Both countries had agreed on December 2 on the sanitary certificate requirements.

    Chapo Guzmán's son arrested in Mexico

    Ovidio Guzmán had been arrested in Culiacán on Oct. 17, 2019, but was released the same day

    Mexican authorities have arrested Ovidio Guzmán, also known as “El Ratón,” for allegedly trafficking fentanyl and other drugs. He is the son of former drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who is currently incarcerated in the United States.

    At least 10 prison guards have been killed on New Year's Eve during a shootout as over twenty inmates escaped the Social Rehabilitation Center (Cereso) 3 in Ciudad Juarez, in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. Four detainees were also reported to have died in the riot.

AMLO, as he is widely known, was inaugurated on December 1, 2018, having promised to improve Mexico’s economy, reduce poverty and inequality, and tackle corruption and violence, all while strengthening the country’s infant democracy, and will leave office on September 30, 2024. With his term more over than not, most of what he was going to achieve has already been achieved – and it’s not much.
