  WTO fails to agree rules on over-fishing; billions of dollars spent subsidizing fishing fleets

  

  World Trade Organization negotiators have failed to reach a deal by a year-end deadline to cut the subsidies that have helped decimate the world’s fish stocks, but will try again next year, the chairman of the talks said on Monday.

  WWF blasts EU fishing quotas ahead of ministerial meeting

  

  European ministers have approved the catching of millions more tons of fish than scientists have advised over the past nine years, a report has shown. Fisheries ministers, who meet annually to decide quotas for stocks across Europe, have only strictly followed scientific advice on fisheries in 13% of their decisions, the report by World Wildlife Fund, found.

  Argentina bans hake and squid fisheries; Auditing office confirms over-fishing

  

  Argentina suspended the hake season in the south of Patagonia and banned squid operations following on scientific reports of over fishing that have considerably limited catches of both species said industry sources following an official audit which questions government fisheries controls.
