The Falkland Islands Fisheries Department scientists are currently investigating whether changes in fishing gear used in the finfish and loligo fleets can reduce by-catch, Fisheries Scientist Alexander Arkhipkin told Penguin News.
Virtually unknown to the Spanish market, the rock cod (Gadiculus argenteus argenteus) is a white fish which is of a similar taste to hake, which is abundant in the waters of the South Atlantic near the Falkland Islands and could become an alternative to traditional species.
The Loligo and Rock cod fisheries have performed well over the first seven months of 2010, although it is too early to predict the overall performance for the year confirmed Falkland Islands Government Director of Natural Resources John Barton.
