A batch of millions of 50p coins celebrating the coronation of King Charles III will begin circulation in UK. Featuring a design by Royal Mint coin designer Natasha Jenkins, the coins are the second 50ps to enter circulation bearing the monarch's official coin portrait.
A commemorative 50p coin has been unveiled by the Royal Mint to mark the BBC's centenary. The coin - priced at £11 - pays tribute to the BBC's global reach and shows a broadcast mast emerging from the Earth.
Commemorative coins minted to mark Brexit on 31 October will be recycled after the UK's exit from the EU was delayed by a further three months. The Royal Mint had been asked to produce new 50p pieces featuring the UK's scheduled departure date.
A special set of coins celebrating British cultural history has been unveiled to mark the 50th anniversary of the 50 pence piece. The Royal Mint has released a proof set in honour of the “revolutionary” seven-sided coin introduced in 1969.
UK’s Royal Mint will supply Argentina with 150 million peso coins, after the institution won a contract to assist with the minting of a new coin series. Announced on social media by UK chancellor Philip Hammond, the mint will work closely with its Argentine counterpart – Sociedad del Estado Casa de Moneda – to produce blanks for the new coin series.
The old round pound is on the way out, slowly being replaced by the new 12-sided coin, brought in by the Royal Mint in attempt to thwart forgers. Both pound coins are currently in circulation, but soon the old pound coin will lose its status as legal tender and will be worth no more than the metal it's printed on.
As of 9 September 2015 Queen Elizabeth II will be the longest reigning monarch in British history, surpassing the reign of Queen Victoria. The Queen's coronation took place in 1953 which means 2015 marks her 62nd year in power.
