
Tierra del Fuego lawmakers on Wednesday approved, unanimously the bill which bans salmon farming in the waters of the province. Sponsored by Pablo Villegas from the provincial party, Movimiento Popular Fueguino, the bill privileges the environment over such an industry, and according to its promoters places Argentina at the head of the green economy.

The Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego will be voting a bill on Wednesday to ban salmon farming in the waters of the extreme south territory, according to reports in the Ushuaia media.

The Falklands ocean coastal ecosystems are one of its biggest assets and, “its value is beyond measure,” commented Islander Josh Peck speaking against the introduction of a salmon-farming industry to the Falkland Islands, at last Tuesdays workshop on an environmental strategy held at the Chamber of Commerce, as reported by the Penguin News.

The Scottish Government is being urged to suspend its support for increased production in the salmon farming sector. It comes as a new report claims the impact the industry has on employment and the economy has been hugely overestimated.
