  South Georgia stamps celebrate 250 years of British Crown possession

  

  The Falkland Islands Postal and Philatelic Service on Thursday 13 November released a commemorative set of stamps celebrating when Captain James Cook 250 years ago, landed at Possession Bay and took possession of the South Georgia island in the name of King George.

  Memorial stone at Westminster Abbey to mark Shackleton 150th birth anniversary

  

  A memorial stone to Sir Ernest Shackleton, one of the most celebrated Antarctic Explorers of the twentieth century, was dedicated at Westminster Abbey in London on Thursday 15th February 2024. The service was attended by HRH The Princess Royal, Patron of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.

  South Georgia Museum open for business; 113 cruises booked to visit the Island

  

  The Museum on South Georgia is fully open and offering all its services for the first time since its early closure during 2019-20 season. It was closed slightly early in March 2020 due to the global pandemic and remained closed the following summer and then a very small team managed to partially operate the museum for part of last (2021-22) season.

  Recapture of South Georgia will always be a part of the story of the Falkland Islands

  

  39 years ago, Operation Paraquet – a subsidiary of Operation Corporate – led to the successful recapture of South Georgia by British Armed Forces. This followed an initial incursion on 3 April by the Argentine military, which was one of the earliest flashpoints of the Falkland Islands War.

  South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands coat of arms anniversary featured on new Crown coin

  

  The Treasury of South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands have launched a crown coin which marks the 30th anniversary of the territory’s granting of a Coat of Arms by Royal Ascent. The Coat of Arms of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands was granted in 1985, upon the formal creation of the territory.
