  South Georgia Museum releases stamp set to commemorate 30th anniversary

  

  The Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) released this week a stamp set to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of The South Georgia Museum. The Museum at Grytviken is owned by GSGSSI and operated by the South Georgia Heritage Trust, a charity registered in Scotland, as reported by South Georgia Newsletter.

  Research and Monitoring Plan for South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands Marine Protected Area

  

  A new Research and Monitoring Plan has been launched to help support the management of the South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands Marine Protected Area, MPA. The announcement was done in the January edition of the Sough Georgia Newsletter.

  Spatial Segregation of Seabirds at South Georgia

  

  The latest edition of the South Georgia Newsletter refers to seabirds, which are amongst the most globally threatened birds, often as a consequence of incidental mortality (bycatch) in fisheries. At South Georgia, wandering albatrosses have declined since the 1970s, and are listed by the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) as one of nine global High-Priority populations for conservation.

  247 anniversary of South Georgia Possession for the British Crown

  

  Monday, January 17th was South Georgia Possession Day, marking 247 years since the first landing on the island was made by Captain James Cook. The British explorer was on his second world voyage aboard HMS Resolution.

  The drifting giant A68 iceberg released billions of tons of fresh water in South Georgia ecosystem

  

  Scientists monitoring the giant A68a iceberg from space reveal that a huge amount of freshwater was released as it melted around the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. An estimated 152 billion tons of freshwater – equivalent to 20 x Loch Ness or 61 million Olympic sized swimming pools, entered the seas around the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia when A68a melted over three months in 2020/2021, according to a new study published this month by the British Antarctic Survey.

  HMS Protector pays tribute to explorer Shackleton at South Georgia on her trip to Antarctica

  

  Sailors from Ice Patrol HMS Protector paid tribute to legendary Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton – a century after he died pushing the boundaries of polar research. The crew of the icebreaker held a memorial service at his graveside on the island of South Georgia – the latest stop for the survey ship as she heads to the frozen continent for a summer of scientific research.

  Alarming population declination of the rare Antarctic South Georgia shag

  

  Data collected from a long-term study by British Antarctic Survey (BAS) scientists shows declining populations of an already relatively rare Antarctic seabird, the South Georgia shag. Published in the journal Polar Biology, a 40-year census from Signy Island in the remote South Orkney Islands and a 30-year census from Bird Island, close to the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia, have shown significant population declines at both locations.

  On Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021, some people in the Southern Hemisphere, Falklands, South Georgia Islands, will have the chance to experience a total or partial eclipse of the Sun, according to US space agency NASA.

  Malvinas Islands' crest in all Tierra del Fuego sportswear and school uniforms

  

  In anticipation of the 40th anniversary of the Falklands/Malvinas War, in 2022, the Argentine Tierra del Fuego province legislative passed several bills making it mandatory that all teams' sportswear in all the different competitions representing the province must have the Malvinas Islands crest, “and hopefully this initiative will also be implemented by other provinces”.
