  Uruguay, the worst in the Americas for suicides, reached a new record for self-murders in 2021

  

  Despite the fact that Uruguay has been positioned by many indicators as one of the most advanced countries in terms of socioeconomic equality in the least egalitarian region of the world, where access to health and solid institutions with low corruption rates is relatively guaranteed in relation to its neighbors in the region, the Uruguayan Ministry of Public Health (MSP) reported that last year there were 758 suicides, which is equivalent to a rate of 21.39 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

  Former Bolivian interim President harms herself in apparent suicide attempt

  

  Former Bolivian interim President Janine Áñez was hospitalized following self-inflicted injuries believed to be a suicide attempt after learning she had been charged with genocide for two massacres in the 2019 events surrounding the resignation of Evo Morales and her accession to power.

  Another Uruguayan footballer commits suicide, third in two weeks and fourth in 2021

  

  Retired Uruguayan footballer Maximiliano Castro was found dead over the weekend at the age of 46. The cause of death was ruled as suicide. Castro had played professionally until 2008.

  Alan Garcia in suicide note denies all charges: “I leave my body as a sign of my contempt for my opponents”

  

  Peru's late former president Alan Garcia left a suicide note denying the corruption charges against him before taking his own life, one of his children revealed on Friday. Garcia, who was 69, died on Wednesday after shooting himself in the head when police came to his home to arrest him over allegations of money laundering during his time in office.
