United States President Donald Trump said on Monday that US authorities would begin next week removing millions of immigrants who are in the United States illegally. There are an estimated 12 million immigrants who are in the United States illegally, mainly from Mexico and Central America.
The US is to send an additional 2,000 troops to its border with Mexico, the Pentagon has announced. It will bring the total number of troops stationed on the southern border to about 4,300. The Pentagon said the soldiers would help border-patrol agents, carry out surveillance work and install miles of razor wire.
An investigation has been launched after a seven-year-old girl died while in the custody of the US Border Patrol. The Guatemalan child, named as Jakelin Caal Maquin, was detained last week after crossing the US-Mexico border with her father, officials say.
