    Wall Street fresh records on expectations of a FED interest rate cut

    The Federal Reserve is widely expected to cut benchmark US interest rates by 0.25 percentage points at its upcoming July 30-31 meeting.

    Optimistic investors drove Wall Street to fresh record highs amid strong expectations of an impending US interest rate cut. The Dow Jones index lifted by 179 points, 0.7 per cent, to 26,966. The broader S&P 500 posted its third consecutive record high, up 0.8 per cent, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 0.75 per cent.

    Wall Street marked its best day in 10 years as stocks rallied back on Wednesday, giving some post-Christmas hope to a market that has otherwise been battered this December. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped more than 1,000 points — its biggest point-gain ever — rising nearly 5% as investors returned from a holiday break. The benchmark S&P 500 index also gained 5% and the technology heavy Nasdaq rose 5.8%.
