Stanley Services MD Relinquishes Position

The Shareholders of Stanley Services Ltd announced yesterday that Michael Burrett has relinquished his position Managing Director of the Company. In a statement from the Chairman, Mr Mike Summers it was reported that until further notice the post of Managing Director will be filled by Mr R.C. Series, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive of HR Holdings Ltd. The Chairman declined to make any comment as to the circumstances surrounding news but did affirm that Mr Burrett will no longer have an involvement with Stanley Services Ltd. Mr Summers reports that the local operation of the company remains unchanged.

Secretary of State for Defence Affirms UK Position

The Secretary of State for Defence, Mr Spellar told the House of Commons recently that the role of the British Forces in the Falkland Islands is to demonstrate the United Kingdom's continued commitment to the Islands and uphold the right of the Islanders to self determination. This statement was made in reply to Dr Julian Lewis who wished to know the current role of the British Forces in the Falkland Islands.

Standard of Accommodation in the Islands for Service Personnel

Dr Julian Lewis asked in the House of Commons on 30 October for the Secretary of State for Defence to make a statement on the standard of accommodation for British service men and women deployed in the Falkland Islands. Mr Spellar responded with a written answer. He said "the latest survey of grading for condition of living accommodation in the Falkland Islands shows that all families quarters and the majority of the single living accommodation units are in good condition, with over fifteen years of residual life." He concluded, "Improvements to fire prevention and heating systems are, however, necessary in the short-term."

Calls for More Effective Enforcement on Toothfish Fishery

The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC) has called for more effective enforcement in the Toothfish fishery.
