LAN Chile Flight Delay due to Mechanical Problems

The cancellation of Saturday's LAN Chile flight was due to mechanical problems with the aircraft in Rio Gallegos, Argentina. Rumours that Argentina had denied the flight airspace were strongly refuted by Jennie Forrest of International Tours and Travel, the local agents for LAN Chile. Jennie explained earlier this morning that they will now have to reapply for airspace and the aircraft is expected to arrive in the Falklands as soon as the permits are in place, probably before next Saturday. This is said to be their first cancellation due to mechanical problems ? the delays in July and August were due to weather conditions.

Memorial to be built in London

The Mercopress News Agency report that a memorial commemorating the servicemen and women who have died on active service or in terrorist attacks since 1945 is to be built in London. Geoff Hoon, defence secretary, announced a consultation on the location and form of the memorial, which will mark principally the casualties from Northern Ireland, Kosovo and the Falklands, Korean and Gulf wars. Mr Hoon said it was likely to bear the names of all the dead and that "what is lacking is any public place which commemorates the sacrifice of those servicemen and women killed on duty and by terrorist attack since the end of the Second World War." Mercopress report that the announcement was timed to coincide with this weekend's Remembrance services. In the Falklands an extension was opened to the Memorial Wood on Remembrance Sunday. The wood, which was planted in 1992 as part of the Heritage year programme, contains 255 trees one for each serviceman and the three civilians killed in the Falklands war. The extension of 41 trees, one for every service man and woman who has died in the Falklands after 14 June 1982 was planted a couple of weeks ago and its opening on Sunday was marked by a special service of dedication.
