Latest FIDF Exercise Details.
The latest exercise to be hosted by the Falkland Islands Defence Force will be Commando Challenge Falklands Patrol and it will take place between Thursday 16 and Saturday 18 November. This exercise will involve teams marching over long distances and completing military skill tasks throughout. This year the route will take the teams from Teal Inlet to Stanley. Previously the route has been from Port San Carlos to Stanley, however that is not possible this time due to constraints on manpower and time. The name Commando Challenge is derived from the route Yomped by 45 Commando Royal Marines in 1982. The second aim of the exercise it to raise funds for the 82 Trust, which is a local Trust set up to assist persons with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of the 1982 war. The FIDF have reported that Norman and June Besley-Clark are very generously supporting the competition by sponsoring the medals, which are awarded to the winning teams. The exercise will conclude with a prize giving ceremony and presentation of cheques in the FIDF Drill Hall on Saturday evening. Sponsorship forms for the event have been distributed throughout Stanley and people are asked to support this worthwhile cause. There will be times when teams will be seen on the roads in the Stanley area and this will be an opportunity for the public to give them support.
