In news of a nautical nature the HMS Iron Duke was in port over the weekend as were two tourist vessels. On Sunday the Lyubov Orlova, which has a passenger capacity of 128 and the Kapitan Dranitsyn, which has a passenger capacity of 112 both visited Stanley.

Financial Times Run Reindeer Story

The Financial Times has today included a story regarding the transportation of reindeer to the Falklands. The article has described it as an innovative programme of economic diversification and has reported how once fully on stream, the government hopes to recoup an initial 150,000 pound investment with just one years export of venison. The Financial Times says that the reindeer are about to bring some seasonal good cheer to the Falklands.

Poppy Appeal £221 Donation

The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal is today better off to the tune of £221 thanks to students at the Falkland Islands Community School in Stanley and members of the Stanley Golf Club. Bob Fiddes and Alan Jones representing the legion this morning attended a presentation of a cheque for the amount from Tim Simpson's tutor group 10 Fitzroy. The students had collected £92 from their small change throughout the year ? the remainder was donated by members of the golf club who had auctioned some of their golf balls. The tutor group also raised over £95 earlier in the year for the Mozambique flood appeal. Tim Simpson said the amount collected by the group is the largest, since students began fundraising for various charities in 1991.

Harold Briley Reports on Condemnation of European Force

In an article written for Mercopress, Harold Briley has reported that the Commander credited with leading British soldiers to victory in the Falklands land battle, Major General Julian Thompson, has joined in the growing condemnation of the proposed European force, along with Britain's principal United States ally in the 1982 war, former Defence Secretary Casper Weinberger. Major General Thompson, writing in the Daily Mail, says: "I am convinced that our position in the Falklands campaign would have been far more precarious if we had not had the support of the United States?It may well have played out
