FIG oppose Argentine desire for two monthly stopover Rio Gallegos.

Attempts by the Argentine Government to introduce a 2nd monthly stopover in Rio Gallegos by Lan Chile aircraft enroute to the Falklands has been opposed by the Falklands Government.

Argentine's will not assist physically with Falkland's mine clearance.

An offer, extended by the Argentine Government to finance the clearance of mines laid by Argentine Engineers during the 10 weeks of Argentine occupation of the Falklands during 1982, has been accepted in principal by Falklands Councillors. A safe and secure means of lifting the mines is to be the subject of a ?Feasibility Study' and the terms of reference of the study are still under discussion, hence the lack of any material progress since the Argentine Government offer of 3 years ago.

Argentine Government “Retrograde” and “Anachronistic”.

The Argentine Government has been accused by former Falkland Islands Governor Sir Rex Hunt of “retrograde” behaviour in shunning Falkland Islanders while persisting with what he calls “Argentina's anachronistic claim” to sovereignty over the Islands.

Commemorating “Battle Day”

Battle Day ceremonies in the Falkland Islands and in London this weekend (December 8th and 9th) commemorate the Battle of the Falkland Islands on 8th December, 1914. Wreaths are laid every year at the Battle Memorial in Stanley and at the Cenotaph in the heart of London.
