Several people whose achievements were recognised in the United Kingdom New Year Honours have links to the Falkland Islands and to South America.
Heading the list is a hero of the Falklands War, Air Chief Marshal Air Peter Squire, KCB, DFC, AFC, ADC, FRA es, now Chief of Air Staff, the professional head of the Royal Air Force. He has been awarded a GCB, a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. Flying from the aircraft carrier Hermes in the 1982 Conflict as a Wing Commander, he led a series of sorties, in one of which, a Harrier raid on Dunnose Head airstrip, Islander Tim Miller was blinded in one eye by shrapnel. They have since become good friends.
A naval officer, Captain Robert Neil Blair, LVO, RN, private secretary to both the Duke of York and to Princess Alexandra, who accompanied the Princess on her Falklands visit last year, becomes a CVO, Commander of the Victorian Order.
Sandra Henney, who accompanied the Prince of Wales to the Falkland Islands, Argentina and Uruguay in 1999 as his Press Officer at the time, is awarded the LVO in the Victorian Order.
Among diplomats, the British Ambassador to Bogota, Colombia, Jeremy Walter Thorp, is awarded the CMG, Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and St George.
OBE's (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) go to Alan Richard Keith Dickson for services to the British Community in Argentina, to Michael Roger Pearson Smith for services to British commercial interests in Argentina, and to John William Redfern for services to English language teaching in Brasilia, in Brazil.
An MBE (Member of the British Empire) is awarded to Captain Andrew Alsop, a British Antarctic Survey pilot for services to Polar aviation.
