Argentine voters are sceptical about a possible reversal to the current situation even with a new president, according to the latest poll published this weekend in Buenos Aires daily La Nación.

The Graciela Romer & Associates poll indicates that 71% of those interviewed believe that little or nothing will change in Argentina, no matter who wins March 30th. Presidential elections.

Only 17% feel that their candidate has good chances of reforming the country, and among those candidates former president Carlos Menem outstands, who nevertheless figures third in the current preference rating. Former Peronist governor and president Adolfo Rodríguez Sáa is still ahead with 15,6%, followed by Elisa Carrió, a left wing candidate that is promising a total renewal, with 14,1% and then Mr. Menem with 11,2%.

Regarding changes, 57% of those interviewed demand drastic modifications and 39% express moderation. "People don't seem to find differentiating messages in the candidates' presentations, particularly regarding those issues considered a priority by the electorate", concludes the poll.

However candidates are beginning to have their own profiles: Ms. Carrió and another leftist Deputy, Mr. Luis Zamora are identified with ethical and political renovation. On the other hand, the electorate recognizes leadership and capacity to fight street crime and insecurity in Mr. Rodríguez Sáa and Menem. Those who long for a new country and new ideas, favour centre right economist and former Defence and Education Minister, Ricardo López Murphy.
