The 1982 South Atlantic War between Argentina and Britain can now be fought all over again ? albeit as a war game called Operation Flashpoint ? Malvinas Campaign - on Internet.

A group of Argentine network games enthusiasts have developed a war game that allows battles of the 1982 war to be fought once again. Using OFP / Operation Flashpoint, the Czech war game simulator launched in 2001 in which NATO faces the Soviets during the Cold War ? the developers have adapted the program to recreate the Falklands War.

To achieve this they inserted a 3D map of part of the islands, redesigned and/or modified the uniforms, weapons, vehicles to coincide with those used in the conflict and reprogrammed the missions to be accomplished.

According to an article published in the latest edition of the Argentine Army's in house Soldados magazine the creators of this project have totally modified the original game ? or carried out a mod in cybernetic jargon ? redesigning the existing images and incorporating details of the 1982 conflict. This demanded a painstaking amount of work adapting everything from the landscape to the uniforms and add in a large quantity military hardware ranging from a Sterling submachine guns to Milan wire guided missiles, from Gazelle, Sea King and Puma helicopters, to Panhard and Scimitar vehicles.

The game can be played in several ways: as a single player against the computer or in a multiplayer alternative in which various players face each other in a network mode. In the multiplayer mode the players can chose among several options such as playing against one or various other players.

The single player mode is the only one in which the player can follow the story line ? that is from the Argentine point of view ? and has three characters to chose from: an Army conscript, a pilot officer and an Army commando.

The creators say that the campaign they have designed for this game is 75% combat by infantry and/or Special Forces and 25% airborne operations.

Among the battles recreated for the site the creators of this war game have included the San Carlos landings, the clash between Special Forces at Top Malo House and the skirmishes on Mount Kent among others.

Technical requirements to be able to play this game in full are a 800 Mega Pentium III processor with a 256 RAM memory and a 32 Mega video card.

The site- which is still being developed ? can be found at www.malvinas.cazadoresdemonte.com.ar and includes English and Spanish options and a Forum to exchange information.
