Recently named, Argentine former legislator Jorge Arguello officially became this Tuesday in New York the new ambassador before United Nations. Arguello succeeds Ambassador Cesar Mayoral.
His first task will be to support Argentina's sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands before the UN Decolonization Committee or G24, next June 21st. The Argentine delegation on the occasion will be headed by Foreign Affairs minister Jorge Taiana who is expected to underscore that 25 years after the end of the South Atlantic conflict, the United Kingdom refuses to resume negotiations over the Islands sovereignty, contrary to the mandate of international organizations such as the UN and the OAS. When he was named Arguello promised a new Malvinas/Falklands initiative taking advantage of all multilateral spaces to advance the Argentine cause. Arguello said Argentina will underline that since the UN General Assembly resolution of 1965 calling for the resumption of dialogue between Argentina and the UK, London has consistently denied any form of dialogue on this specific issue. The former legislator arrives in New York following the launching of the Parliament Observatory on the Malvinas which functions at Argentine Congress Lower House level and which he sponsored as head of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Argentina has repeatedly argued before the C 24 that the "unilateral and illegitimate actions undertaken by the United Kingdom" have become a further obstacle for the resumption of sovereignty negotiations.
