The annual Fisheries Science Meeting of the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) was held recently in the Falkland Islands
This meeting, which brings together representatives of the companies that fish in South Georgia with the Island's government, is usually held in London Speaking last week on the Falkland Islands Radio Service, Miss Harriet Hall, Chief Executive of the SGSSI Government, which is based in Stanley in the Falklands, explained that the aim of the meeting was to discuss findings and exchange information. Miss Hall explained that the licence fess paid by companies to fish in the waters off South Georgia include an element which pays for the obligatory scientific observers, which each vessel carries. This meeting gives the companies an opportunity to learn more about the research, which they have helped to fund. Also represented at the meeting was the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) which maintains a scientific station in South Georgia at King Edward Point. This station is funded by the Government of South Georgia and runs surveys around the island to assess fish stocks as well as doing some of the scientific analysis of the findings of the observers aboard the ships.
