Argentina: Fisheries exports register declines in volume, value

Argentina exported 190,446 tonnes of fish and shellfish worth USD 371.4 million in the first five months of 2008, indicate statistics released by the National Food Safety and Quality Service (SENASA). These figures represent an 11.2 per cent fall in volume and a 9.7 per cent drop in value compared to the same period last year when 214,373 tonnes were exported for USD 411.3 million.

Between January and May 2008, SENASA certified fish exports at around 115,480 tonnes and valued at USD 251.5 million, and 74,966 tonnes of shellfish valued at USD 119.9 million. Squid ( Illex argentinus,/i>) exports ranked the highest in volume and value with 64,818 tonnes sold for USD 54.8 million. Common hake (Merluccius hubbsi) followed with 51,280 tonnes worth USD 125 million; hoki (Macruronus magellanicus) with 12,606 tonnes worth 23.7 million; and Argentine anchoita (Engraulis anchoita) with 9,774 tonnes worth USD 16.7 million. Next in the exports ranking was shrimp ( Pleoticus muelleri), which registered 7,453 tonnes worth USD 52.8 million; golden kingclip (Genypterus blacodes) with 3,398 tonnes worth USD 14 million; Patagonian scallops (Zygochlamys patagonica) with 2,374 tonnes worth USD 10.4 million; short-tailed river stingray fins (Potamotrygon brachyuran) with 2,485 tonnes worth USD 5.8 million; and Patagonian flounder (Paralichthys patagonicus) with 1,588 tonnes worth USD 7 million, among other species. Spain continued to be the main importer of Argentine fish and shellfish in purchasing nearly 57,938 tonnes worth USD 110.9 million between January and May 2008. Brazil was the second most important importer with 18,401 tonnes worth USD 47.6 million; followed by Italy with 12,967 tonnes valued at USD 33.6 million; and further behind, the United States with 7,522 tonnes worth USD 25 million.
