Rockhopper claims first gas discovery in North Falklands

North Falkland basin explorer Rockhopper Exploration has reclassified a previous exploration well drilled by Shell in 1998, as a gas discovery and as a result has claimed the first discovery in the Falkland Islands.

Credit card companies in the US will be bound by new restrictions on their ability to charge fees, or raise interest rates on existing borrowings. On Friday, President Barack Obama is signed a new law which will come into full effect next February.

Angry UK reaction to Spanish navy incident in Gibraltar waters

Britain has told Spain that the recent incursion by a Spanish Navy vessel was an “unacceptable” violation of British sovereignty over Gibraltar waters. The complaint comes after a Spanish Navy fisheries protection vessel carried out checks on Spanish fishermen just off Gibraltar.

Third re-election running “inappropriate” admits Colombia’s Uribe

Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe says it would be “inappropriate” for him to seek a third consecutive term. His statement comes two days after the Senate approved a referendum that would ask voters to permit him to run again. Uribe did not, however, clearly rule out a re-election bid.

US ends week with three regional banks seized by FDIC and new owners

United States banking regulators seized two banks in Illinois late Friday as the financial crisis claimed its 35th and 36th federally insured financial institutions of 2009. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) estimated the failure of Strategic Capital Bank and Citizens National Bank would cost 279 million US dollars.

Brazilian aircrafts for nationalized Aerolineas Argentinas

The Argentine government signed Thursday a contract to purchase twenty mid range aircrafts from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer for recently nationalized flag carrier Aerolineas Argentinas. President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner said these will be the first new aircrafts for Aerolineas in 16 years.
